Smith Lake

Backraft Score: 9/10

We used Jack’s spring break as an excuse to road trip to the Trinity Alps and Wallowas. We also got some great floats in at home! Because Smith Lake was the defining point of this trip, that’s the only backraft I scored. It could have easily been a 10 — the lake was full of fish, probably gets 10 visitors / year, and had TWO waterfalls pouring into it — the only thing holding it back was the color. I know these California lakes don’t have as much glacial flour (maybe because it’s an older range?) but I see no reason to judge them in a vacuum. Overall it was an amazing trip and we saw some really cool places.

Warming up the rafts in Plain and pit stopping Smith Rock on our way to Smith Lake!

Before Bear Gulch vs after Bear Gulch — we were never the same again.

One of my favorite shots ever

Happy to be at the lake!

One of two waterfalls flowing into the lake!

Type 1 fun day!

We caught a bunch of small cutties in the pond above the lake!

California granite is pretty cool!

🌞

We earned our fries on this one!

Next we popped over the Wallowas to find that the lakes were still frozen! Whoops!

Back to Leavenworth for a final float!
