Gardening 2025
I knew I was going to be gone a lot, so I only grew tomatoes and flowers — the most important things to grow at home!
I grew several varieties of tomatoes — Roma, Purple Cherokee, Red Cherry, Sungold, Moskovich, Beefsteak, etc — and have determined that I really only need two types: 1) sungolds and 2) any classic, round tomato. You need something for sandwhiches and soups, and nothing is better than a sungold off the vine! Cherries are nice for making sauce but…they’re easy enough to get from the farmers market. They’re also aggressively bushy so you need to keep up with pruning them more.
It was so great to come home from all my trips to new flowers and lots of tomatoes. Another great year of gardening! A few other takeaways from this year:
- Winter garlic is only worth it if you have the space to go late into spring
- It’s best to have deer-proof flower varieties
- If you’re going on a trip early May, you’re better off putting the tomatoes in the ground before you leave than waiting until you return
- Make sure you include something that keeps soil loose for the seedlings (e.g. perlite). Coco coir is best.
- I’m moving my basil operation indoors so I can have it all winter! Mint can stay outside.
- Having automated watering is mandatory!
